Haga patria, compre un auto

Daniel Drezner nos cuenta que en su periódico local lleva un colorido aviso publicitario con el siguiente título: GM vs. IMPORTS: 'BUY AMERICAN... BECAUSE IT MATTERS! General Motors está, desde hace tiempo, en coma. La competencia de las compañías asiáticas encabezadas por Toyota, que han desarrollado sus ventas a partir de fábricas en suelo estadounidense y los serios problemas gremiales de estos últimos años le han complicado seriamente la vida al otrora gigante de Detroit.

El aviso, que parece un manotazo de ahogado para despertar el patriotismo en los consumidores, es indefendible. Esta entrada en Business week define muy bien la cuestión:

Mr. Fukui is absolutely right. While the it hold true for several industries, "buy American" certainly doesn't fly with the automotive industry.

It depends on how you define "American." Are Hondas made in Marysville, Ohio, any less American than a Ford made in Canada or other country but sold in the U.S.?

My first car was a Tempo -- made in Canada. At the time, my dad drove a Honda Civic, made in Ohio. To me, his was more "American."

Most of today's automotive consumers are not hung up on the "made in America" label because we know how global the automotive industry is.
